thoughts/info on MMR
taken from private board with permissionWell, Im not really sure, but G may be scheduled for her MMR vaccine on Monday. She gets a 13 month appointment rather than a 12 month.
I know I dont want her to have it yet, but really dont have any solid reasons that dont sound like "I heard it on the internet." I do have a real-life friend who delayed her son's vaccine till he was 3, because of fear of autism. She warned me to be prepared for the ped to assure me that there would be absolutely no risk.....
Anyway, I just want to be ready to stand firm. I have heard that there is a link to autism, but also that it's just a coincidence because autism tends to show up around the same age as the MMR is normally given. But then I have heard that kids with autism for some unknown reason, have the measles virus present in their gut.
Even if there was no autism link, this vaccine is supposed to cause painful reactions and fever, something my little teething "cherub" does NOT need right now!
I figure she has gone a year without being protected from these diseases. Why cant she go another year?
Have any of your babies had it yet? Any reactions? Non vaccing mommies, any good info as to why? Anyone just waiting?
Thanks gals! Wink

Delaney has had it. She had a mild reaction. Basically she was crabby. I did research it and decided the benefits outweighed the risks. You should feel comfortable with your choice, so keep looking into it. One thing that made me more comfortable was the fact that my ped uses thimerisol free vaccines. We haven't done chix pox yet, and they were fine with that. Your ped seems pretty cautious from what I've read in your posts, so talk to them about it. Maybe you can make an appt just to discuss this? Here are a few links

I know there is a lot more info out there, I just don't have time right now.
Good luck Re: thoughts/info on MMR

I just found this article on an Autism site (I was starting to worry about k's lack of vocab, but I'm apparently being overly concerned at this point Roll Eyes), it seems relevant.

We don't vax c at all. We did a lot of research before she was born and came to the conclusion that although there were pros and cons in either direction we'd trust nature this time.
My brother was the only one of my siblings that got the MMR and he has autism so it really makes me think. I as you know have a much milder form called Aspergers but i wonder if i'd had the MMR whether it would have been worse. Sorry i don't have any links to sites. But i say if your gut says no then go with it. Re: thoughts/info on MMR

Here;s a link that you may be interested in to support your delay of that vaccine.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/miller/miller15.htmlI am delaying Joshua's vaccinations and spreading them out. I do not want his immune system overloaded. So, my vax schedule is something like this:
12 mon- nothing
15 mon- DTaP booster
18 mon- PCV booster
24 mon- MMR
36 mon- nada
48 mon (4 years)- polio booster
5 years- Hep B series (if I send him to school) and if forced, Chicken pox vax

The brain has its own specialized immune system, separate from that of the rest of the body. When a person is vaccinated, its specialized immune cells, the microglia, become activated (the blood-brain barrier notwithstanding). Multiple vaccinations spaced close together over-stimulate the microglia, causing them to release a variety of toxic elements – cytokines, chemokines, excitotoxins, proteases, complement, free radicals – that damage brain cells and their synaptic connections. Researchers call the damage caused by these toxic substances "bystander injury." (Pediatricians and other professional colleagues who question this should read these two reviews by the neurosurgeon Russell

. Blaylock: "Interaction of Cytokines, Excitotoxins, Reactive Nitrogen and Oxygen Species in Autism Spectrum Disorders," in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association [JANA 2003;6(4):21–35], with 167 references. And "Chronic Microglial Activation and Excitotoxicity Secondary to Excessive Immune Stimulation: Possible Factors in Gulf War Syndrome and Autism," in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons [JAPS 2004;9(2):46–52], posted online, with 54 references.)
In humans, the most rapid period of brain development begins in the third trimester and continues over the first two years of extra uterine life. (By then brain development is 80 percent complete.) Until randomized controlled trials demonstrate the safety of giving vaccines during this time of life, it would be prudent not to give any vaccinations to children until they are two years old. From a risk-benefit perspective, there is growing evidence that the risk of neurologic and autoimmune diseases from vaccinations outweigh the benefits of avoiding the childhood infections that they prevent. An exception is hepatitis B vaccine for infants whose mothers test positive for this disease.
This is the part of the article that I was referring to inmy previous post.

Thanks guys....now Im even more confused, lol! Wink
Cindy - has Joshua had any vaccs yet at all? The article you quoted is scary to me, considering all the vaccines G has had already. So far she has had everything on schedule. But, her peds have separated them, so she's never gotten more than two at once.
This may sound weird but I think it's sad they have a chicken pox vaccine now. I remember when it went around and my sister had it, and I just couldnt wait to get it! Staying home from school, and my best friend had it at the same time so we talked on the phone all day. Re: thoughts/info on MMR

I didn't mean to confuse you! SORRY!
Joshua has been vax'ed on schedule until now. I am spreading the rest of them out. I do want him vax'ed-- just not the way the AAP or the CDC thinks I should do it.

We vax, on schedule. However, I think our ped's schedule is a bit more spaced...MMR for Emily will be at 15mos. Personally, I think the link to autism is bogus, from everything I've read.
Like anything, it's all about your life experience. So, for Megs, b/c of Autism in her family, she's more leary of the MMR. For me, both my kids have both had the polio vax, b/c my mom's best friend when I was little had polio. It's a scary and debilitating disease. Again, once you know someone that's had this, you never want to see someone suffer that way. You just have to make the best decision you can for your family, there are no guarantees either way, therefore there is not a right or wrong answer. Re: thoughts/info on MMR

Hope - I could be pleasantly surprised on Monday to find she doesnt do it till 15+ months. That'd be nice! Either way Im putting it off till at least then. If she has a chance of not feeling well from it, Id rather it be when the weather is nicer!

I really struggled with this decision even though up until now I've really put little stock into the idea that vaccines cause autism. Now that I've done more research I do think that it is quite possible that vaccines could activate something in someone who is already predisposed to a condition. We have no family history of autism or autism spectrum disorders so we went ahead and vaxed. She had no reaction at all.
We are delaying chicken pox for a little while - actually until she goes to school ideally. My ped wasn't thrilled with the idea and I may have to get it earlier because there is the possibility that she may have to be in a daycare center a couple days a week over the summer but at her last appt she was getting the MMR and her second flu shot so I wasn't comfortable introducing a live virus vaccine to her at that point. Maybe at a time when she isn't getting anything else.

Benjamin had his MMR shot at his 12 month appointment. 7 days later he developed a high fever that lasted for several days, and 10 days after developed a rash. I read online that 1 in 6 will get the fever, and 1 in 20 get the rash. I had to keep him out of daycare because he could have been contagious (with measles) to the baby there, as she hadn't been vaccinated yet, until his fever was gone for 24 hours. The first two days of fever, he was miserable, barely eating, not drinking anything from a cup, but would nurse okay. He slept a lot. I had to have an MMR when I was 25, those things hurt!
