pump advice?
« on: February 05, 2007, 12:34:41 PM »

I'm so angry. "Someone" in my house broke my pump. I have a medela single deluxe pump, and I let the stupid machine part sit on the sink in my bathroom. Someone dropped it on my floor and it broke . The yellow plastic piece where the battery goes is cracked and can't suck air so it can't suck MILK. I'm so sad. I know the stupid thing was only $64 at BRU but I'm mad it's broken. I need it. I'm going away to FL in 2wks kidless, I will be away from her and needed to take it on my trip to obviously keep up my supply.

Has anyone ever contacted Medela to get something fixed? Should I just suck it up and get a new pump, maybe a cheaper one? Does anyone use a cheaper one that works well? I only need it to be electric- not fancy or fast. I looked at the Advent in Target and it was only $30, anyone use that style? I will be gone 4 days, I could do a lot of damage to my supply within 4 days and need help.  Cry

Any advice?

I had a cheapie advent one that I used a couple of times but found to be almost useless - it took 45 minutes for one session and was the noisiest thing you've ever heard.  I used it 3 times before I decided to go and buy the PIS.  Granted, I was EPing so I needed something pretty efficient and heavy-duty but I think that even for a few days the Advent would be a big pain and really different from any Medela on the market.

Dh was investigating how to "rig" it while he watched the superbowl...and then he bid on one from ebay for $10. The replacement part from medela was almost as much as the thing cost in the first place OF course. Roll Eyes

I tried a bunch of pumps, from cheap to profesional, and the one I liked the best was tha Avent Isis hand pump. If you just need it for short term I would totally reccomend it.

i have the handheld manual Medela one, it is horrible. The first few times it worked great, but now it hardly sucks at all. Would not recommend it at all.
On the electric pump side, I have a hospital rental and i love it- i got it thinking i'd try it out and then return it and buy my own- but that never happened, and now, 8 months and $320 later (40$ a month) I really got screwed....

If there's any chance of another LO, I'd go for a good one- why keep pumping money into cheap ones that won't hold up...(oh, that was a good pun, didn't even cath it right away!)

GOod luck, have fun on your trip!

ugh...thanks  Cheesy I am looking forward to it! I've lost 3 ebay bids today for pumps, the first one outbid me by like a buck, the next was a couple dollars and the next one just doubled me! I think it's a scam now...this is my first real try at ebay and I suck! I did find the replacement part for sale for $19.99 but they want too much for shipping. I should just suck it up and pay, I've got to get it before 2/22 and what if it's not here in time  Shocked

Heather - can you rent a pump from the hospital or a LC for the couple of weeks that you would need it?

Heather, funny I should lurk over here today, I just found this site today and it sells spare pump parts!  http://www.mommygear.com/

Too funny the differing opinions on the Avent Isis........I loved mine so much, I got a second, and double pumped by hand...for 15 months!  ROFL  But yes it was noisy.  Poor DH, had to turn the TV up many a night.

In case you all were wondering...and I'm sure you were...(j/k) I got my new pump parts from a lady on ebay who never used hers and she just sent me the motor that I needed. Yippee! I busted everything out (after not pumping for a few weeks!) and wa-la...10 oz! WOOHOO
I have to get everything all stocked up in the freezer for my trip and then I'll be pumping while away from her so I don't get a low supply, I am sure she's going to be clingy once I get back. thanks for your tips and advice!
