You know, I find myself being quite annoying and repetitive. Since I'm already use to signing "eat, more, please, drink, milk, sleepy mommy daddy hi byebye all-done" all of the time, I started some new ones this week. -Like EVERY diaper change I sign the song "this is the way" (mulberry bush) this is the way we change the diaper, change the diaper, change the diaper, this is the way we change the diaper in your bedroom" b/c I am hoping she'll learn CHANGE soon so I know when she has a diaper in need. I do light "on" and "off" whenever we go in and out of her room, and "car" when we go out.
You know, I almost took a signing class in college b/c I was going for education and they offered it as an elective. I wish I had!

we are doing it!! i sign everything to him now, even though he only does milk, he recognizes most of the signs for sure. we are currently doing, milk, more, eat, drink, sleepy, potty, ball, dog, cat, fish, giraffe, elephant, monkey, tiger, alligator, bird, hear, music, dance, loud, cold, hot, lights, bath, mommy, daddy, gramma, hi, bye, anything at all i can think of to do. he looks at me when he sees something new, and watches for the sign, even though he doesnt sign it back i can tell he knows that it is communication. he is so cute, he sees something new, he looks at me i do the sign and he smiles and makes liittle noises.

Hello! I thought I was slow noticing the new forum but I see i's very new, too. Elisabeth was signing milk a lot (usually to others, not me- with me burrowing into my boob is a more direct communication) Well she stopped that for a while but but now is starting again. She tends to backslide on skills when she's figuring out something new. I'm reading what you're saying and it sounds like you're introducing loads of signs. The books say to do it slowly, but that makes no sense to me- we introduce them to all kinds of words, and they hear even more in ambient adult conv. so why not more signs. I think I'll start doing that more. If I start one day as a habit, I won't be able to stop, LOL. I used to sign with a patient ( 4 y/o) and then would catch myself signing to people the next day or at my other job. (I still can't seem to wrap my mind around the fact that not every one knows the sign wait- I use it a lot at work if I'm on the phone but want to talk to the person in front of me before they go. I always get surprised when they walk off! But I'm signing wait! I even start signing "louder" LOL) Anyway... (some mama needs more sleep to make more sense...) We have done mama, daddy, dog (we know she knows them but does not sign them) more, eat, play, and her favorite toys- dinosaur, bird, bunny, bug, frog, fish, etc. Shane seems to be thriving on being "bombarded" with signs! OK today is officially "Mama signs everything day" here! I like that song, Heather! Sometimes we sing/sign Mama Loves You (tune of Frere Jaques) she likes that!

I don't overload her on signs, I had my first 6 (I only did those 6 during December at 6 months) and once I saw her do half I started to add a few more...and as she does them back we'll keep adding ++. The book I use is "Signing Smart with Babies and Toddlers" by Michelle E. Anthony and Reyna Lindert, that's where I got the song. There are plenty more. It's filled with lots of ideas and activities. I guess since I'm a certified teacher, I like to use "lesson plans" LOL. I'll keep adding them and other ideas to this board fro the book so those of you without it can try these things out too!

we introuduced that number of signs over a long time, once i knew he was recognizing a sign i would add one. im not going to wait for him to do the sign back though, because i know that he knows it and wants to see more.

I've gotten a little lzay over the past few weeks with my signing, mostly because I'm back at work during the day and DH doesn't do them with DS during the day. I should keep at it because I think when he starts to do more of them back to us, DH will start to see the logic in it. Have any of you heard any "words" lately? Being a FTM, maybe I'm hearing things with my heart and not my ears, but sometiems I swear he says mama and baba (which is "daddy" in moroccan which we speak at home). Anyway, that was off topic...my favourite signs to do are milk, mama and baba, bye bye, sleepy, milk, toys, diaper, more, and eat. And my absoulte favourite is "i love you" because i really want him to do it back to me....i know it's a little selfish, but it will be so cute when he does, even if he doesn't really know what it means...

Those are the best ones to start with imo! Last night we had company over for dinner and Brinn was sitting in her chair at the end of the table so nicely...all of the sudden she yelled on the top of her lungs and of course was signing MILK MILK MILK over and over and everyone was SO impressed LOL. I said "I know, she's jut a genius!" I didn't tell them how easy it is for her to learn...
