ok when shane was born i wasnt very educated about all the things i am now. i tried to read as much as possible and know what i needed to know but i missed a lot of stuff about NATURAL options unfortunately. shane received all of his shots at brith and 2 months. at 4 months i had read a lot more about vaccines and didnt get most of them. he has gotten hepatits b , prevnar, hib, dtap, and polio. i am so PISSED off now b/c even though they gave me sheets showing what the vaccines were all for and i did read them i didnt notice, and i have been reading now that HIB and prevnar both are for the exact same thing! why the HELL does he need two shots for the same thing? i would NOT have gotten one of them if i knew they were both for pneumonia and meningits, and the prevnar also is for ear infections. i am so mad now!! hib is one of the safest vaccines from what i read and very very rarely has a side effect and has also been around a while, where as prevner came out only in february last yr and i dont see any need to vaccinate for EAR INFECTION. i havent found a lot of info on whether or not dtap is REALLY neccessary or not. are you doing it? i have no idea if diptheria and pertussis are real dangers to him or not. what do you think?

We don't vax. here is just some of the info on why we don't. http://www.byronchild.com/arts8.htmbtw, the decline in disease also coicided with a vast improvement in hygiene not just with immuniations. i struggle with the decision from time to time but feel it is more of a risk to vax than not for our family.

We did vaccine, but I refuse to give him any "new" vaccines. The main reason that we did vaccinate, was because we travel outside of the country, and because we live in South Florida where there are a LOT of immigrants. (Not saying anything bad about immigrants, but a lot of people here are from places which are "third world" ,sorry I know that's not PC, or very close to being third world, where the diseases are still around.

I also vaccinate, but don't do any of the new ones (so far rotavirus was a big NO).

We also travel a lot out of the country. I did a lot of reseach, but ultimately decided to vaccinate. America is very narrow minded, and it is SUCH a hassle to get your kid in public schools without some vaccinations. You have to really watch them because they will give them everything under the sun though. When I took my two year old in they tried to give her a chicken pox vaccination, even though there is a good change that it would cause her to get it! HELLO! I have an infant at home that she could give it to!

We're going ahead and doing most. It was a real debate with me but after I thought I caught pertussis and was afraid of giving it to her it kind of settled it. Now I have a pertussis booster, too, but still. I know it's kind of sad that I go for the vaxes partly because of my job, but that's the way it is, now. Pertussis (whooping cough) outbreaks do still occur in the US and while it's not as bad as it used to be it still can be risky- like Megs said, hygiene helps and also now we have antibiotics. (Bad sometimes, overused certainly, but sometimes appropriate- pertussis is bacterial)
I'm not so worried about diptheria, though. Still see mumps from time to time and rubella (german measles) I only once saw a child with measles (rubeola) and she was from oversees- so I see Vintage's point.
HIb and Prevnar vax against different bacterias, I'd be more concerned about HIb, though, than the pneumococcal. I think it's silly that they even say "ear infections" since that is a rare cause of ear infections, kids will still get them anyway if they're prone to them.
I skipped the rota though... a little from the concerns of the last rota vax and also because I think rota is more of an inconvenince for parents than a danger to kids. The only kids I've seen get really sick from rota (I mean need surgery sick) were kids who's parents weren't keeping on top of their sypmtoms and keeping them hydrated or brought them to the doctor for dehydration really late or kids who had other health issues. I know healthy kid of good parents can get really sick but I don't think it's too common.
Good link Megs!

We have done all of our vaccinations so far but none of the "extras". I would have gotten Debby the rotavirus though, had it been available, due to the fact that she's a preemie and therefore more susceptible to many things (you should see the list of stuff she's caught already!).
And Liz~ I know what you mean about the double vaccinating, that's annoying that they do that. Trust me, though, you do not want Shane to have even a remote chance of catching meningitis. I had it in fifth grade and almost didn't live to tell about it. It's truly awful!
