I tried to do a day with no underwear last weekend because I figured that I had the long weekend to keep Jocelyn naked and see what she would do with the potty training. Well, the first time she started to pee I put her on the potty and made a big hurah about peeing on the potty but she didn't seem to care much. I was watching her an about an hour later she started kinda grabbing at herself so I said - "Oh, do you have to pee? Let's go potty!" She lost her mind! "No, Mommy! I don't like it! I don't like potty! I want diaper - put diaper on!" So of course I put her diaper on and she peed immediately. I haven't tried putting her on the potty since and I'm not real sure what to do. I think she is physically capable but I'm not going to have a potty battle with her. Any suggestion? My gut is to just wait right now and probably until we move and she is settled.
Anybody else have any thoughts?

"My beautiful, sweet angel" says her cheesy mama

Does she follow you into the bathroom when you go? I am pretty sure that is one of the reasons that Delany figured it out so easy. We don't have much privacy in this house... I have heard from a lot of my friends that their children are afraid of the toilet. Oh, and are you using a little potty or the big potty/ Delaney was afraid of her little potty, but took to the big potty right away. Jocely is so advanced with her speech, ask her why she wants to use the diaper? Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

Nigel was scared of all potties for a while there. Now he sits on his little potty to brush his teeth, and about a week ago I started sitting him on it before his bath after I took his diaper off, just to get him on there bare-butt. I also showed him how to point his penis down into it, which he thought was great fun. He hasn't peed in it yet, though. Sorry, I don't really have any suggestions, I just wanted to let you know that with time he got over it. It could be that twice in one day was just a little much for Jocelyn, she may need some time to process the whole thing. I know for sure that my boys wouldn't go from NOT doing something to doing it several times a day, so she may have just felt overwhelmed. Good luck decoding... Jen

AP Mama to 3 Kids
|
Jessica, I think that sometimes the more verbal kids are the later ones in physical development, including PT. I say this b/c both Jessie and Emily were early talkers, like Jocelyn, but as you know Jessie was a VERY late potty trainer. She PT'd at 3yrs 9mos old. Of course, now, at 4ys, she goes completely on her own and you wouldn't know any difference between her and other 4 yr olds in this regard...she comes and goes to the bathroom on her own, able to pull down and up her clothes, wipe herself (except poop...4 yr olds still need help w/ this), flush the potty, and wash her hands. So I don't think there's any reason to rush, b/c she'll catch up when she's emotional ready.
Like Shannon, we also have no privacy around here. Both girls come and go as I go potty. Both have sat on the little potty and the big potty to play. But, going from playing on the potty to wanting to pee on the potty is totally different things. My best advice is to take her diaper off in the bathroom a little early before bath time and if she shows signs of needing to pee, sit her down on the potty to see if she'll go. If she fights it, put the diaper on. If she's thinks it's fun, just stick to the bathtime peeing for a few mos. After she's done that for a while, then try cloth training pants. That might get her motivated to go during the day...but again, I"d wait until you've had some success at bath time. I think slow and gradual is best at this age. There's really no rush since they just turned 2yrs.
Also, there's no point going hot and heavy on the PT right before you move...b/c she'll have to change babysitters and such and that will REALLY throw her off. You'll definitely want to wait until she's comfy w/ the new house and babysitter first. GL!!

personally i'd just let it go for a while. maybe like the others said introduce the potty for before bath or when brushing teeth. There were some really good suggestions above.

Thanks guys.
She does go to the bathroom with me - pretty much all the time - and she loves to get the toilet paper for me and flush it so she's not afraid of the potty. I think I will just stick to leaving it in the bathroom (we have a little potty that she'll sit on from time to time but she really doesn't like the big potty) and ask her if she wants to sit on it when we are in there together. She does love to brush her teeth so that might be a good one!
I know we're still early on the whole spectrum of PT but I just want to make sure we don't miss an opportunity. Thanks again!
