6 month checkup
« on: December 14, 2006, 05:37:43 AM »

ok, yesterday was the 6 month checkup ( i know i had started a thread asking what everyone's well checkup schedule is, but i think it got lost last week) Anyway, our usual dr is going on sabaticle (sp?) and so she is slowly handing her patients off to a new dr or a nurse practitioner...well, the one that we got is totally not into the AP/NP lifestyle- she totally criticized us, and i spent the whole time defending what we do...anyway, i kindly asked if we could see someone else, and they complied which i wasn't expecting...so, to make a long story short, the new guy, really cool, said we should start him on meats and that they are more important than the fruits and veggies since more of the produce vitamins make it into the milk than those of meats and proteins would...anybody hear that before? And I'm kind of on the fence about giving him meats at all....anybody else feeling that too? We eat meat, less and less all the time, but we eat it none the less...

Woah, i'm such a rambler! Also, does anyone else's baby got all over the growth chart- Mohamed's head is in the 98%ile, but his height is in the 75%ile and weight is only 50%ile- that just seems too wierd to me like he is disproportionate or something...he now has an 18 3/4 inch head! Thank god for modern medicine and c-sections!

Ok, to sum  up- what to do about meat? And anybody else have a top heavy kid? (Too bad he's not bottom heavy...weebles wobble but they don't fall over! too bad!)

Mari, I wouldn't give meat to Mohamed yet or at all.  We're vegetarian so of course we are a little biased but meat rots in their digestive tract and i'm not sure that their system is ready for that yet.  Meat is totally unnecessary in a healthy diet.  I switched 4 yrs ago and i am so much healthier now.  i don't take supplements at all.  If you are unsure about giving him meats at the moment just tell your doc that you are considering being vegetarian.  He should respect that.
Also food in the first year is mainly for practice, not for nutrition.  Do what you feel is right.  maybe scour our veg board for info.

on the growth chart Asha is in the lower percentiles for head circumferenc but right at the top for weight and height.  a weeble wobble.

Mari, Glad you were able to get a new dr. who is more sensitive about your lifestyle.  About the meats, I don't eat meat at all and I don't plan to start Debby on it.  Her father does eat meat but he certainly is not going to push it on her at such a young age.  If you have ever read the book "Super Baby Food" the author doesn't really think meats are necessary or good for your baby either.  In the end, you have to do what you feel is right for your baby.  If you have misgivings about giving meat, then put it off!!  Good luck.
