Brinn cut her first bottom tooth in the night! I'm kind of sad, teeth were my reason to quit nursing before b/c I was bit so horribly, any tips on how to keep the baby from using it as a chew toy?

i am definately petrified of the Big Bite...so I talked to my ped about it and her recommendation was to start "breast etiquette" way before the tooth even comes in- teach that it is only for eating, not for playing. So I have followed that so far, as soon as he starts to play, like wiggling or pulling, I take him off and say "Lunch all done" or something similar, and if he hurts me, I just say "Mommy is not for hurting" and stop feeding him. I DO let him comfort suck because that is one of my favorite parts of being a mommy- being needed- but as soon as it turns into entertainment, I end it. So far it is working pretty well, but i am definately scared of the bite...maybe we could just delay teething to, i don't know, 5 years old? HTH ~Mari

Aidric has 2 teeth now (not totally out, but very sharp) he likes to bite, and it definantly hurts. He likes to pinch too. For the biting, "NO" or "OUCH" or "STOP" didn't work, they make him laugh. Try pulling your LO in close to your breast. That doens't work that well for me, but usually if I pinch his nostrils closed lightly, he'll open his mouth and stop, then resume normal feeding. If that doesn't work (lately he has kept his teeth clenched shut, but just opened his lips so he could breathe still) just insert a finger like you would to correct an improper latch on, and let them bite your finger instead. If you have problems with the pinching, just put a pair of socks on their hands while they nurse. Then take them off when you're done. Hope that helps!

Well, she cut the first top one last night. I could hear a grinding coming from her mouth, and there it was! She's bit me horribly lately!! I'm making it work, but I'm so tense!!

Luke just cut two teeth yesterday. My daughter would bite me all of the time and even cause me to bleed! I started to dread breastfeeding her. Finally I started to just put my boob away if she bit me. She quickly learned that biting meant no more boobie, and she stopped. A lot of people told me to tell her "NO!" if she did it, but like a PP said, she just laughed.

Is Mohamed the only toothless baby here?! He doesn't have any teeth, and to be quite honest doesn't have any signs of one coming in any time soon- no swollen gums and no little white shadow lurking under the gums...While on one hand i want him to keep up, at least i'm not getting bitten yet!

i would'n't worry about the no teeth yet, it avoids a lot of issues later on as many of the mums of 2 yr olds will be able to tell you. If their teeth come later theres less exposure for them to possibly rot. Asha got her first tooth a couple of days ago and now we're i the throws of teething. she wont feed this morning or through the night and woke 4 times from the pain, poor bub. we sent our 2yr old for a sleepover at her grandmas last ight so we could sleep or just have to deal with one bad sleeper.

Debby doesn't have any teeth either! It makes me kind of happy that I am pumping instead of giving it to her straight from the tap (lol), I don't have to deal with the biting issue! Of course, overall I wish that she would have learned to latch, but I guess that's a different discussion!
