Oh the THRUSH!
« on: December 11, 2006, 02:21:47 PM »

This is the one thing I hate about nursing my boy.  I had a horrific time postpartum that required me to be on copious amounts of antibiotics, resulting in thrush.  Once I figured it out (Im a FTM) we were treated and things were better.  The problem is it never fully went away for either of us.  I've just been managing it on both of us, so it's been fine.
The other day I noticed it making a strong comeback in both of us.  YIPPEE   So the treatment gets aggressive...again.  DS will be 6 months in a few days so we still have a looooong time to deal with this.  Please tell me we're not alone in this......there's comfort in numbers.

Sorry, I just had to vent a bit...and maybe beg for suggestions?
Thanks!

how are you treating it?

I'd suggest taking probiotic capsules and also giving your DC some too, it'll just give your treatment an extra boost.  on my dd i used an oral gel treatment and i needed more than ne tube to get rid of the thrush.  have you been continuing treatment after the thrush seems to be gone?

Thanks for the responses!

I initially took diflucan.  It didn't touch it.  Then I was smearing monostat cream on me between nursings.  It helped, but not enough.  Vinegar did the best.  Oh, and I eat yogurt everyday. Smiley

For my son it's been Nystatin.  He's been MUCH better than me.  Whereas I kept treating myself, he didn't need it past the 2 weeks prescribed...until now.  He's back on the stuff.

well-baby checkup is Weds, so I'll talk to pedi about it then.

oh I feel for you- while we didn't have any problems with thrush, we've had many nursing problems. I definately feel for you. I don't have any advice, but hopefully you can get some relief after talking to your ped. Have you thought about pumping for a few days to give eachother a break? Maybe you guys keep passing it around and that break might clear you both. I know it's not the most favourable of options, but it might work...
Good luck, let me know how it turns out for you.

Hi Mari!
I would consider pumping for a few days, but my boy refuses to take a bottle.  He'll only take one if he's absolutely ravenous and beyond waiting for me (DH has stated this...I have yet to see the boy actually consider taking a bottle  LOL).  No big deal.  I'm thinking it'll probably just be something we'll have to deal with bouncing back and forth for the duration.  I'm not going to try to wean him for another year, and we can definitely put up with it.  It's just one of those things. Smiley

Tomorrow is our well-baby checkup.  I'll talk to the pedi and see what she suggests.  I suspect part of the problem right now is that the nystatin we have is a different brand from this summer, and it's quite watery.  It doesn't seem to be sticking to his tongue like the last one.  I'm taking it with so she can see what I'm talking about.  Maybe we can get a refill or a different something....I'll let everyone know how it goes! Oh, good!  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's not been satisfied with Nystatin!  Actually, the first time we used it was good, but it was a different brand than what we got this time and it's really watery.  I think that plays a huge roll.
We're dealing.  I'm biding our time as we just started solid foods this week and I know yogurt will clear it up for him (I exhibited my blonde self with the earlier suggestion....I think you meant him using it, not just me..duh).
Gosh, this stuff is just...well...awful!  But it's worth dealing with to have the time with my boy and knowing he's so healthy because of it Smiley
