Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone else has the flat nipple/baby won't open mouth wide syndrome....I've pained through it this far, but some days it's really taxing. I can't get enough breast tissue into his mouth and it results in really painful nipples. For a while i tried those nipple shields, and in the beginning it wasn't painful (after the initial few seconds where the breast tissue was pulled into the artificial nipple) and I didn't like it because I just felt defeated using them. Not sure how to resolve the problem- i won't wean though, i'd rather just have the pain. The Lactation consulatant at the hospital where mohamed was born is not very helpful- her only advice was nipple shields or wean, she pretty much gave me no hope for sucessful breastfeeding.
I had one inverted nipple and my LC had me start on the other side and switch, that way the initial frantic hunger thing is taken care of and you have a little bit of a calmer baby to work with, and she had me use a handheld pump to draw out the nipple. I used these together for awhile and now that nipple is definately not inverted! In two weeks it will be two years though, so it seems like awhile ago......
