60 minutes tonight.

Being there: attached parents
Mothers breastfeeding five year olds. This is not some fringe, New-Age fad. These are parents with very firm ideas about how we should bring up our kids. Firstly, you have to be there, attached to your child 24 hours a day. No school, no discipline and definitely no cots, prams, dummies or even nappies. They all break the mother-baby bond. They're confident all this will produce independent, free-thinking kids. But, ask their critics, and they say spoilt brats are more likely.

you can jsut tell that this is going to be a bashing on just a few of the practices that can contribute to AP... and using very extreme samples to show them...

investigative journalism at tis finest im sure.

someone should make a doco on AP , somethin balanced andhelpfull to people looking for help.

wooooooww!  what's the point of that nonesense?  No discipline?!  that really gets my goat.   Angry

You can look on the bright side, though.  I've read about an effect in human psychology (used in advertising, but misunderstood by many) that makes people more likely to do something that is publicised as being "a growing problem" because at some level, we want to be like other people.

I hate how these shows only show the extremes. OTOH, they wouldn't have any viewers if it was all just straight-forward and bland.

I watched it and i am mad.  They had some so called expert on who said that anyone doing AP is harming their children.  It was so biased.  i might have to write a letter to them.  Their attitude towards the show was that these people were freaks and it was wrong.  you're a freak therefore if you don't spank your kid, you cosleep, you EC(which they didn't explain well at all).

They should do a story on how mainstream parenting is damaging kids physically and emotionally.

you can see it here

part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv8itNc7cb4
 part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rg1dNH2lhw

it was pretty bad but not as bad as i expected.  they certainly paraded a few AP parents and stung them up as weird. they have a doctor on claiming thees parents were socially neglectfull.

they really picked some extremes (they had only 1 australian family also) 2 UK family's

the UK lady was seriously extreme, (i think they must have taken footage from doco's or something over there)  they were at a mall with her and going through the baby section and she was talking about cots "baby jails", bouncers " neglect -o- matic",  how dummys are lazy as we use them to replace the breast. she EC's and of course they made it lok like it was a hugely messy and disgusting practice with the child pooing on the floor ect...

the otehr family had a 5 yr old and a younger child nd an older child, the younger two (5yr old down) were still breast fed...  tey were homeschoolers and i guess quite extreme and as usual they really used there editing tools to make them sound like absolute crazies...

i think for the most part (although once again editing is a problem) the australian lady Janet is actually a member of a forum i am a meber of (althogh i dont know her personally) and i think she did great, but they really made her look as though she was a lunatic also...

the doctor.... he made me so angry i cant even start.

youguys can watch for your selves.

megs maybe we could write letters in doubt much difference but they sually run to air teh following week a few rebuttles as well as the cheering comittee.

I couldn't stop watching!  That docter, wow.  You know what I was thinking, though?  sure, yeah, a few of the things they showed did look a little wierd and out of control, but I'd challenge any parent who watched that to look at any 24 hour period in their own life with kids and not find 30 seconds worth of footage that looked wierd and out of control, kwim?

All in all, at least the slant was obvious, right?  No one's going to watch that and think it was objective.  they showed a woman ECing her baby successfully, which was cool. (it's funny, I totally felt her pain trying to get the sling and her hair out of the way while she pottied him!) the poo on the floor, well, must've been unlucky.  they did say she peed the kid THIRTY times a day.  that's a lot.

I'm still peeved about the repeated misrepresentation of positive discipline as being lack of discipline.  I mean OK, I'm really really ticked off that that quack suggested that a parent should scold the child for having a hissy.  Like that's going to help?  give me a break!

haha megs, i agree  did you notice the UK family when the kids were on the table the father was slowly counting to five... also that family used dummies (something they stated in the beggining was a big no no)-

the editing of it was definately biased.
