I'm having a hard time resisting the urge, too! We started Ava just shy of 5 months, and she has some allergies so that is helping hold me back. Even though I know it probably won't make a difference I'm so hoping that solids help Willa's sleeping!

Hey ladies, While I understand the importance of waiting until 6 months for some babies- preemies, those with digestive problems, born into families with known food allergies, babies with respiratory problems or delayed head control etc...However, I really think that if your baby is ready before then, seems hungry after nursing and is otherwise healthy, I don't see a problem with a half a teaspoon here and there. We started cereal at 5 months as per the recommendation of our pediatrician- who agrees with our AP/NP style- because she said for his weight and size he could use the extra nutrients. I decided at that point that his health was more important than my determination. I guess I rationalized, also, that since he was 2 weeks late, he was really 5 months and 2 weeks when we started, and hey, what's 2 weeks.... Our pediatrician also recommended that we start giving him "real solids" like veggies about a week before we go for his 6 month appt because she said parents always have questions at that point and if you don't start til after that appointment, it may be a few months til you're back to see her again. IMO, a few guilty sneaks of food won't hurt- don't beat yourself up about it. I guess it's no worse than some of the things they put in their mouths...

your whole post made a lot of sense to me, and made me feel a lil better. his doc more or less told me start if you want, wait if you want and thats why i am mad at myself, because he does not NEED it yet... and also at the appt i new he still had his tounge thrust reflex so i knew he wasnt ready and did it anyways. he spit it all out so i really dont think that any allergy could possibly come from it. thanks for making me feel better

I know Asha doesn't have a need yet, so i'll try to hold out. there are allergies in our family too. Charlie had cereal from 4 months and has stone fruit allergies. but if they're ready and theres no family history i don't see a problem.

Well my dr gave her the ok for rice cereal but asked me to wait LOL, which I found funny. He said "if she really seems hungry, go ahead and try cereal". Well she stopped sleeping through the night for a few days and I thought, oh ok cereal time. Nope, she had an ear infection! Anyway, I tried to give it to her 4x's and she didn't want it. She actually will see the spoon coming towards her and she starts sputtering and blowing bubbles to keep it from going in her mouth! Stinker!
