Of course I'm not teaching numbers yet as a parent but with the kids I used to care for I used to do a lot of "thinking outloud": Let's get your shoes- one shoe, two shoes. Lets put forks on the table- 1,2,3,4,5 forks. Etc. Even if they weren't directly involved, like me putting away clean shirts- then they think that numbers are very "grown up"!
Sadly, one feisty kid really learned her numbers by me constantly having to say (firmly) It's time for bed, let's put on your shirt. Ally. 1,2,3,4,5, NOW. She got a kick out of signing "NOW" with gusto, then letting me put on her shirt. I was terrified she's always think that "now" was the number between 5 and 7!
It seems that after they grasp the first five, the next five come easy to them.

Yea, we do pretty much what pp said. We count things as we go along in our day. Going down the steps, the kids love to count how many there are. Counting coins while putting them in a bin is another fave. We also have a few books about counting...one of our faves is "10 little ladybugs". We also have a couple number songs we sing. One we got from the Doodlebops and one we got from a learning toy. It's just counting up, but in a sing-song kind of way. We often sing these songs as I'm pushing them in the swings or they're taking a bath. I also sing the ABC song when I'm pushign them on a swing or they're taking a bath. Of course, Jessie sings all the way thru since she's just about to turn 4...Emily can count and catches ABCs here and there. Jessie is getting to the stage of number/letter recognition. We're not quite where I'd like her to be, but she's starting. Of course, Emily's really too young to conistently recognize number/letters...but she does get "A" and "1" right now.

If you're already doing those things, then it's just a matter of when it clicks in C's brain. It's not something you can force...it just happens all of a sudden. I think just exposing them over and over in a fun way is all you can do.

We just count as we do things too. Delaney, as usual, seems to be doing things a little differently. She doesn't rote count. She isn't learning the number until she she recognizes and understands what it means. For awhile she would say one, two, three, four, nine, but now she will only go to four. She really likes to concentrate on one skill at a time though, and lately it has been talking.

kody's kinda like delany i guess. he thinks about counting and how many as two different things, I think. if you say "let's count" he'll say 2,3,2,3,2,3, but if you ask how many he'll just say 2 or 3 or 9, though it doesn't matter how many there actually are, unless it's something we've discussed.
