I know it is often hard to find good unprocessed foods for breakfast.
We have whole grains for breakfast almost everyday, and they taste really good!
2 cups buckwheat 2 cups millet 1 cup white rice 1 cup brown rice
We make up the mix and then put about 1/3 cup with 1 1/2 cups of water, which is enough for 2 people. Bring to the boil and then cover and let sit until it has absorbed all the water. Sprinkle with ground linseed (buy whole linseed and use a coffee/spice grinder) and add rice or soy milk if a little dry and yogurt if desired.
Charlie has a big bowl of this every morning.

Please tell me you put that in the food processor first! How can you wait for that to cook before you eat breakfast? Sounds good, and hearty. I'm a big steel cut oats fan, if I can wait long enough to cook them. Sooo much better than rolled oats.

Why not cook up a big batch at the beginning of the week & warm it up each day?

Like Charlie, I'm one of those people who wakes up ravenous, but I like your idea for a wholesome hot breakfast so much that I am determined to try it out.
I went to the natch today and picked up a bunch of different grains (Rice, Amaranth, Millet, Buckwheat, steel cut oats, etc. ) and mixed up a bunch of them with a little cornmeal to make it creamier. My idea is to put them in the crock pot tonight so they'll be ready for breakfast, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, it stuck to the sides of the cooker a bit and i think I used too much buckwheat in my mix, but it was a pleasure to wake up to hot cereal. I put maple syrup and walnuts on top of mine, though, instead of linseed.

That sounds good...I'll have to try that some time! Unfortunately, just about everything that cooks a long time sticks to a crockpot, even w/ the pot greased. I use my crockpot everyday and usually find it helpful to soak the dish in hot, soapy water for about 20min before trying to clean. Most stuff comes off after that.

I have never had it stick (except the time I put it on and forgot about it until it was smoking - whoops!!). Perhaps it was the different mixture you used?
I use a stainless steel saucepan and just put the grains and water straight in. Bring it to the boil, then cover and turn off the hotplate (if it keeps its heat, otherwise leave on low simmer for about 10mins). After about 30mins all the water has been soaked up and it is ready. Even when I don't use enough water it doesn't seem to stick.
I hope you try it again and see how it goes.

I think it was because I had it in the crockpot all night. There was pleanty of water, but even on "low" it should have been stirred. Maybe I'll try it again without so much buckwheat.
