Well i finally got rid of charlies placenta today. its been sitting in the freezer for the last 14 months, and i had to do a drastic clean for our moving day so i just chucked it. i'm not trying to gross anyone out, i'm just not sure how i feel about it yet. it was kind of comforting seeing it in the freezer, but since i know i have another placenta on the way i didn't see a need for it. am i completely nuts to be attached to it. anyway that was a big thing for me today.

I don't think it's odd that you felt "attached" to it. Emily's birth was right went the nurses shift was switching over. In the midst of all that, they forgot to take the placenta with them in the chaos to leave. So, when my mom came in afterwards, my mom was totally grossed out that it was sitting in a bowl on the counter and asked one of the new nurses to take it away. I felt a little sad and weird that it was being taken away, but was too busy with nursing to do anything about it.
I know a lot of people keep them & then have a special ceremony when they bury the placenta under a tree they plant in honor of their baby after the baby is born or at a special birthday of the baby (usually 1st). I had one friend who was renting, so she couldn't do that, so they went into the woods near their house and buried it at a special place near some trees a few days after the baby was born.
They thing I don't get is when people eat the placenta. blech! (no offense if anyone hear has done that)

yeah, i'm one of those strange people who did eat some of the placenta, not offended Hope. I put the remainder in the freezer and i just never took it out. i certainly got some strange reactions when people found out what it was.
Thing is i didn't keep it or eat it for spiritual reasons, i just couldnt bring myself to chuck it.
On the eating side, its really not gross tasting at all and i'm going to do it again with the next placenta, i just marinated it and made a stir fry. i know this sounds strange coming from a vegetarian especially but its supposed to be good for preventing PPD.

lotus birth is something i probably wouldn't do. just cant imagine keeping the placenta attached to bub for the time it takes to drop off, and you have to preserve it and maintain it too. a little too extreme for me.
