Nutrition and toast spreads
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:45:55 PM »

What spreads do you let your dc have.
I mean most of the marketing out there says eat me cos i'll give your kid long lasting energy but seriously its just sugared up spreadable lollies in a jar right?  Like Nutella, how can that really be good for a kid?  we give charlie some peanut butter occassionally and some vegemite. we also mash up banana for her bread.  although she doesn't have much bread or wheat anyway.

Same goes for cereals for kids.  what is actually good for them anyway and not just a marketing ploy.  we try to stand clear of all the processes stuff but i'd like all of your opinions on this.

kody doesn't get much bread.  when he does it usually has hummus on it, or we're eating soup and he soaks it up.  I have peanut butter (organic, no sugar, with peanut skin) on my toast for breakfast, and sometimes he'll swipe a little and i don't mind.  He eats "orangutan o's" or "cheetah chomps" with homemade soy yogurt for breakfast pretty much every morning.  they're pretty sweet, but whole grain and organic.  I guess they're not that sweet by kids' cereal standard, now that I think of it.

I try to balance whole products with processed ones, but in reality, my kids get much more processed...especially Jessie b/c she is so durn picky. While Nutella is yummy, I don't see how anyone could think that it's healthy. We have it around here occasionally, but everyone understands it's a "treat".
