I think I found our Homeschooling curriculum
« on: September 24, 2008, 01:20:51 AM »

I have been searching for a curriculum that went along with my idea of homeschooling and I think I have finally found it! I have been looking at a lot of different styles and while I like a lot of them they were all seeming too extreme for me. This one takes most of the stuff from those (Waldorf, Montesorri....) that I liked and left out the stuff that was keeping me away. It is also pretty flexible and has a huge resoure library. I have joined a Yahoo group for people decideing on it but I would love some opinions from you guys  pink flower

Seems like a reasonable approach.  Most preschools and Kindergartens spend a lot of time doing art projects and crafts as a way to learn, so that makes sense.  The package prices aren't too bad...the complete package for Kindergarten is $500. Just to help you compare, I'm paying $1300 this year for Jessica to go to PUBLIC all-day Kindergarten (half-day is free & publicly funded, but the rest of the day is not), yet all-day is the only thing offered this year at our school or the other two school we're closest to.

Hope, I can't believe you have to pay for public school when there is no other option. The district we were in in CO has 1/2 day and whole day and they are talking about going to all whole day. If and when they do they won't charge anymore.

We are paying $780 for preschool this year and we have been told by friends and family in other areas that it is a good deal. I am not super impressed but it is the only one in the area and we are trying to get to know some families with kids.

Yea, it sucks.  We were going to have to pay $1800, but the state legislature released more funds to "help" so that brought the price down to $1300.  They just don't have the funds to fully fund all-day Kindergarten for everyone yet, even though it's being pushed as the best thing.  The frustrating part is that they are legally required to give us a choice for half-day, but it doesn't have to be at our districted school. So, we had the choice to go half day at a school that was 20min drive away (rather than 5min to our districted school and the next closest school and 10min to 2 or 3 other schools).  I think right now, about half the schools in our district are only all day and the other half offer both.  There are 2 schools that offer free all-day K to everyone, regardless of income, b/c they are in the poorer parts of town.  Basically the state has designated most of it's funds to go to "at risk" schools first.  Also, regardless of which school you go to, if you qualify for free or reduced lunch you can go to all-day for free.  The goal is for the state to fully fund all-day K for everyone by the time Zachary goes to K.  Unfortunately, it's a good possibility that we'll have to pay for Emily to go to all-day K too (she goes to K in Aug 2010). uggh!

$780 for preschool seems like a good deal if that's what you pay for the 10mos of school; of course, that depends on how long per day and many days a week she goes.  Here, it's $305 per month for 4hrs, 5 days a week. Most of the schools here are everyday. There are a few options for a few days a week, but are church-based, so I don't know what the prices are for those.

Wow, both of those seem like good deals for preschool!  I pay $125 per month for k to go 3 hours, twice per week.  And that's at the church.  The same hours at the "private" schools around here run  $430 per month for the same amount of time.  I don't think I'm exaggerating.

Sorry, that's OT, though.  I haven't read the curriculum you linked to, I will when I get too tired to work Wink

Wow, I thought I had a good deal until reading these posts! We pay $1500 for the school year for Ben to attend the public preschool 2.5 hours 2 days per week.

ok, wait for it:   close to $5000 each year for 3 full days a week.  I think its a similar fee at most places here.  Hopefully Asha can join Charlie in June next year but she's not likely to get in due to the year beginning in February and her not being 3 till June.

Once Charlie goes to prep year which is hopefully the year she turns 6 education is free but we want her to go to private school so it'll still cost us.

OK Megs, that is just insane! I did a conversion and that is $4,186 American. Wow!
I am going to have to show Scott this thread. Then he won't think $500 is so bad!

It wouldn't actually be bad for a private, secular preschool in NJ.  And we only have public preschools in some districts so it matters where you live, not how much you make.

Hope, that curriculum seems very well thought out.
