Registered Jessie for public school Kindergarten (sort of vent)
« on: April 05, 2008, 12:40:48 AM »

We registered her on Wednesday; she has her official "assessment" in a few weeks (they test the kids to see where they are at, so that they can "balance" the classrooms w/ some high-end, some avg, and some low-end ability kids).  I'm guessing she'll test somewhere in the middle.

So, anyway, it felt so strange...it felt a bit impersonal and I don't think the receptionist was very happy w/ me about asking questions and such. I was starting to get a little frustrated thru the whole thing (my god, the amount of paperwork was crazy) since I had all 3 kids w/ me (and no DH).  Luckily, the family resource teacher is in charge of an activity we do there, so she came in to talk to me & the kids during the process, so that helped some. Mommy-anxiety is definitely getting the best of me right now...it's sort of freaking me out about Jessie going to school everyday next year.  Also, we still don't know if it will be half-day or whole-day. All this time, we had planned on half-day K for next year, since she didn't go to pre-K this year. Well, now the school is telling us that they may not even offer half-day K, b/c so few parents are requesting it at that school.  They have to offer it somewhere in the city, but it may not be close by (not that any of the schools are really THAT far, lol); we'd just rather not send her to a different school b/c we've spent so much time and effort getting her used to THIS school w/ activities there twice a month.  So, there's a slight possibility that Jessie may end up going to school all day (9-3:30). Unfortunately, we may not know until the week before school starts whether or not there will half-day classes. It will also cost us approx $200/mos to pay for all-day (we have to make up the difference between what the legislature pays for half-day and the cost of whole-day, since we're not a low-income family).  I'm not very happy w/ the idea of being forced to pay $200/mos for all-day or being forced to go to a school across town for free half-day.  That just doesn't seem right as far as "public" school goes.

Uggh...ok, sort-of vent over.
