How is Potty-Training going for Dec 04 kids?
« on: September 03, 2007, 02:56:31 AM »

I know some of us have kids who have already trained, some who are currently training, and some who haven't shown interest yet. I thought I'd check in to see how everyone is doing?

Emily started PT before Zach was born, but we didn't really do much reminding b/c we knew she'd regress after the baby was born.  So, we kept her in pull-ups until a few weeks ago. She showed interest in potty training again and started talking about being a "big kid". So, we went w/ it.  We let her pick out some new underwear and she wears those from the time she gets up until she goes to bed. She started peeing and pooping in the potty from the first day. At home, she can go on both her little potty chair, or use the big potty using the special seat (w/ attached step) or the foldable potty seat.  We do have to remind her occasionally, but she's generally pretty good about knowing when she needs to go. She's only had 2 accidents in the last week.  She usually wakes up dry, but we have been putting a pull-up on her for night.  We'll probably stop that in a month or so.  Our only problem has been going potty while we're out. She refuses to sit on a big potty (actually starts screaming when I try to pick her up to put her on the potty), even w/ using the foldable potty seat that fits on top,..and that's the seat she uses mostly at home. So, I keep putting a pull-up on her while we're out (if longer  than a trip to the store).  I'm not sure how to fix this problem other than just wait it out. Any suggestions?

Jocelyn is still showing virtually no interest in potty training so we are a bit frustrated here.  She sits on the potty a couple times a week at school when some of the other kids do but never long enough to go.  I ask before baths and when she gets up in the morning if she wants to sit on it here and 9 times out of 10 she says no.  We've picked out big girl underwear but she won't wear them.

Honestly, I feel like she still isn't physically ready so I don't think I should be pushing it.  She almost always wakes wet from her naps and in the morning.  Not just wet but soaking most of the time.  A lot of times I change her right before we go somewhere and she is wet again by the time we get there.  I don't think her bladder has caught up with the rest of her.

Charlie is mostly day trained.  she has the odd accident(like when she's excited and busy) but for the most part she will take herself to the potty and take her own underwear off.  Naps are hit or miss, but most of the time she waits till she wakes up.  At night I don't know, will have to ask.  As far as i know she is still wetting her night nappy.

Hope, with the public toilet, i'd say just give it time.  she may just be afraid of some because of how they look.  maybe you could show her they're ok by sitting on them(if you haven't already).

Jessica, I wouldn't sweat it w/ Jocelyn.  Jessie was the same way, she just wasn't ready physically or emotionally, until well after 3.5yrs. She PT in less than a week at 3yrs9mos.

Megs, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, usually both I and Jessie go to the potty and she still has the reaction. I'm wondering if it has something to do w/ not having a step to get on the potty. At home she uses a step b/c she not quite tall enough to get on it by herself w/o the step.  When we're somewhere else, the only way for her to sit on the potty is for me to pick her up and put her on it. That's when she freaks out, it seems.  But, I can't carry around a step w/ me everywhere we go.

I agree with Hope - it happens when the kids are ready! Don't sweat it.   pink flower

CM has been out of diapers during the day since March or April. She stopped wearing one for naps this summer, and has been doing really well. She wears one over night. We do have an occaional accident, - usually when she's too busy or excited to remember to let us know when she has to go. She goes on toilets, and does not have any problems going on public ones. She acutally thinks it's kind of fun to explore the ammenities, especially if there's an interesting soap dispenser, an automatic paper towel dispenser, or a hand dryer/blower. Her favorites are the family-style toilets with kid-sized toilets and sinks.

She does have one issue - she does NOT want to do no. 2 on the toilet. She'll ask for a diaper when she needs to make poo-poo, do her business, then ask to have her nappy changed. She is NOT AT ALL intersted in doing that on the toilet. Guess that'll come later!

Let's see... Ben is working at it. I moved him up to the 3 yo room at daycare because all his friends moved up and he missed them. Technically he wasn't supposed to move up since he's not potty trained and they don't have a changing station. They asked me to start bringing him to school in underwear everyday, so I do. I keep him in underwear most of the day on the weekends too. He sometimes has accidents, usually when he's distracted, but often he surprises me by recognizing he needs to go. I still put him in a pull-up for naps and a diaper at night because he will soak the entire bed if he wears just a pull-up at night. He has only pooped in the potty twice ever, which is a bit discouraging considering he goes twice a day at the same time every day!

An update on Emily:  We've been out of town all week. On Saturday, we went to a family reunion at a park. She needed to pee, but refused to put a pull-up on b/c she wanted to "be a big girl" like the other kids that were there. So, after a few tries, she finally went pee on the potty at the park (and w/o the kid's potty seat on top).  Ever since that time, she's only been wearing pull-ups at night. She's been peeing and pooping in potties all over the place w/o any seats and can now climb onto them completely by herself or w/ only a little help. So, when we get home, we're putting away all of our potty seats and chairs and making sure she continues this. I guess when she realized that there was no option to wait it out until we got home, she decided to not be scared of the big potty.  She's actually had fun going potty all over the place this week...the park, Wendy's, Ikea, Sears, the hotel, etc. For me, it's so nice to have both her and Jessie completely day-trained (wears underwear for naps too).  So, now, our only hurdle w/ Emily is going w/o a diaper at night. We've tried a couple of times, and one time she was fine and another she's peed in the night. So, we're not quite there...but hopefully will be soon since "most" of the time she wakes up w/ a dry diaper at night.
