whats up with this?
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:53:13 AM »

For a long while i would feed Asha dinner at 6pm and then at about 7 i would breastfeed her to sleep, then transition her to the bed.  In the last 2 weeks this has changed to dinner and then bfeed anywhere from 6.30 to 8pm, she seems asleep but then wakes up like its a new day and fights sleep till as late as 11.30(last night).  This has coincided with her dropping her afternoon nap.  She just wakes up within 1/2 an hour or doesn't go to sleep and then powers on.  she isn't whingy at all but this is the time when i'm supposed to be doing work.  Any one suggest a solution. should i maybe try really hard to get an afternoon sleep out of her.  she just doesn't seem to need it but then again she is treating her night bfeed as a nap it seems.  Last night i told Tristan i was going to sleep, it was 10.30, and i left him to deal with her.  problem is he works at night too.

also Asha still wakes and bfeeds sometimes 6 times a night.  do i need to bite the bullet and night wean her, i've tried to get her to drink more during the day but it doesn't seem to work.

ive had similar problems with shane. he would wake up the second i set him down, or the second i removed me nipple from his mouth. i read no cry sleep solution which gave me one helpful tip. you could do this with asha to night wean her. when they are sleeping and they have latched on, once they start to drift off to sleep pull the nipple out of her mouth. if she nudges around looking for it give it back to her, wait 10 seconds and then pull it out again. do ti as many times as you need until she settles to sleep without it. i really only had to do this like 2 nights and now he will sleep through the night. i still nurse him to sleep but when hes done eating he just rolls over and sleeps on his own. hth!

I am totally the wrong person to ask because I only night weaned Del right before she actually weaned. She was nursing a lot at night until the end. I was suprised at how easy it was to night wean once I did it, but she was over two, so I just explained stuff to her  Undecided

I will probably be doing it a little different with this one, hopefully nightweaning a little sooner, but we will see  Grin

On the sleep thing, every few months Delaney will totally throw off whatever schedule we were used to and we will have to figure everything out all over again. It sucks!

If I co-sleep with Isa she wants to casually nurse all night.  I've found it helps if I make the effort at the end of nursing to shift her over so she's not lying right at my side.  Out of mouth, out of mind for her!

Well Meg, I'll let you decide whether I'm the right or wrong person to ask about this...
We go through bouts like you're describing often, and to me, to be honest, I assumed everyone did, because I couldn't see a way around it.  I mean, when they start not needing a nap as much, it just seems to make sense that the nap will get later and shorter and nightsleep will get later, too, until the nap blends into the night and things seem normal for a while again.  I think I sympathise with your needing to get things done, too.  It's so stressful when there's work hanging over your head and the kid just won't sleep.

I'm suprised to read you thinking of night weaning, it doesn't seem really to follow from the rest of the issue... or is it a totally separate thing?

Is Asha still taking a morning nap?  Maybe wake her up from her morning nap, if you want to keep the afternoon nap.  Or wake her up earlier in the morning?

On the other side of it, though, it might help to just breathe and realize that the world will not collapse if you don't work x number of hours every day.

Thanks guys.  they are 2 seperate issues.  Asha not going to sleep till atleast 10pm, just means i don't get to go to sleep till then.  And Asha feeding through the night is really disturbing my sleep because i just cant seem to sleep while she feeds.  Its really cold here at the moment too so i'm less reluctant to move her to her bed in case she gets cold.  It'll work out. Tristan doesn't think the late night is a problem and that it will probably change, he's probably right.  night weaning is still very very tempting
